Stanford Optical Ceramics Laboratory
Sometimes even projects that never see the light of day are so good they need to be mentioned. While working for the Stanford Advanced Optical Ceramics Laboratory, I was asked to design a website documenting it’s research and facilities for their local intranet. The design needed to be collegiate yet technical in it’s representation of one of the nation’s leading optical ceramics research and development facilities. Obviously this was going to be an information rich site, and, as a result, I wanted to make sure we found ways to visualize some of the content. This meant searching through books, presentations, various lecture materials, and in some cases photographing or designing visualizations myself.
The design went through 4 reviews with the last two largely focused on minus structure and flow details. In the end I don’t believe all of these were worked out. The site was largely designed to facilitate information flow as well as a showcase for sponsors with intranet access. With this in mind, projects would have been better broken up into smaller more specific sub-categories allowing visitors to drill down into the information as they saw fit.
While the original website was placed on the Stanford intranet, I believe some portions of my code and design were later used in a public internet version.
