Boomshine

This project was done out of pure passion and love for a game I hold near and dear to my heart. Boomshine needs, among other things, a decent logotype, splash screen, revamped navigation structure, and possibly a closer look at it’s gaming experience.

The logotype came first; it is fun and has a suggestion of movement. If there was ever a place that Futura felt at home, it’s in this piece. The subtle change in weight provides a sense of action and is a visual token for the mind to hold on to and remember. It does, however, remind me of something HP might have done before. I reworked the home screen to feature the new logo, along with some expanded navigational options. In retrospect, this may have not been the best approach. A subtler, more elegant approach may have been more appropriate for this simple and calming game. That said,  there is a lot of potential in this design. I can envision this as animated or static, as well as providing a great base for adding features.

Lastly, I wanted to address the game’s staging screens (stats/instructions between levels). While this particular page has not been completely flushed out, I believe it shows a possible direction. My goals here were to introduce both a visual progress indicator (levels) and a scoring indicator, that could be used on both the staging screens and in game. Currently, Boomshine only displays the score between levels. This element could be used transparently over the game screen to always keep the player informed of their cumulative score.

During this attempt to redesign Boomshine, I struggled for a long time on whether to use iPhone design elements. While I choose to develop my own given more time I might explore options that included native iPhone UI elements like the notification system.
